The Scituate CORSE Foundation (Community of Resources for Special Education), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in February of 2006 by a group of dedicated parents and educators to raise funds to provide the highest quality educational and recreational community experiences so students with special needs can reach their full potential. Through fundraising activities, the Foundation is able to allocate funds for a wide range of supplemental resources that will benefit students, parents and educators within our community.

5th annual CORSE Gala and Auction
Saturday, October 2nd 6:30-11:30pm at the Scituate Country Club -
Join us for an evening with dinner, live and silent auction and DJ/dancing. As many of you can attest, it is an extremely fun evening out for a great cause!
Tickets go on sale starting September 1 (Click here to purchase) Tickets will be $50 a person. This year we are offering the option of buying a table of 10 for $400 to provide our large groups with a ticket price bargain! RSVPs are due by September 24th. The Gala is always a near sell-out, so please RSVP early, since each year it gains popularity!
We are collecting auction item donations for the Gala, so if you know of any items, services, gift certificates or tickets that can be donated by yourself or your contacts, please let us know. Tickets to sporting events, entertainment, "get-away" packages, gift certificates to restaurants or hotels as well as local services and unique items are wonderful auction donations. If you have ideas of whom you'd like to ask, please email us first to assure there are no duplicate requests. If you are willing to purchase a gift certificate as a donation, please let us know; this would be greatly appreciated. We'd like to have our list of auction items by September 17th.
This is one of our two community fundraisers throughout the year, so we really need everyone's support and participation. Thanks and looking forward to the grand event!
Students Learn Watersports at Maritime Adventures
This summer 40 students—many of whom had never participated in any kind of water sports—experienced the thrill of sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and canoeing at Scituate’s new Maritime Center.
From August 2-6 the Scituate CORSE Foundation sponsored “Maritime Adventures” by AccesSportAmerica, a national non-profit organization founded in 1995 that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities through high-challenge sports. The program received rave reviews from participants and parents.
Skilled and compassionate instructors from AccesSport, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, utilized specially designed equipment to teach children with a wide range of disabilities to sail, windsurf, Hawaiian outrigger canoe and paddle board. Many of these children have never seen land from an ocean view before. Parents reported that even children who were apprehensive on day one quickly overcame their fears and couldn't wait to come back the next day. Needless to say, it was a fantastic experience for the kids, parents, volunteers and staff involved.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of the Scituate Recreation Department, the Scituate Harbormaster, generous local businesses and caring community volunteers. Thank you for helping to bring this wonderful program to special needs children in our community!

Hit the Course for C.O.R.S.E." Golf Tournament a success!
Our 4th Annual Golf Tournament, Dinner & Silent Auction was held on Friday June 25th, 2010 at Widow's Walk Golf Course and Scituate Country Club. Thanks to our sponsors, players, donators and bidders, we raised over $26,000 that will be used to provide programs and resources for our community's children, parents and teachers. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible; we are very grateful for your support and generosity.
Please note: The CORSE Gala and Auction will be held on Saturday October 2 at the Scituate Country Club. We switched seasons for the two events to better accommodate our members!
Registration for Summer Sports and Recreation Programs Underway
We are pleased to once again partner with Scituate Recreation, Funtastics and Booth Hill Farm to offer a variety of summer sports and recreation programs. In addition to our extremely popular All Stars Summer Camp, this year Scituate Recreation and CORSE are sponsoring a new and innovative water sports program called Maritime Adventures through Access Sports. Athletes participating in this program will build skill sets in adaptive windsurfing, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, sailing and surfing. The camp will provide specialized instructors and equipment from AccesSportAmerica, a national, non-profit founded in 1995 that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities through safe entry to high-challenge sports. Funtastics and Booth Hill Farms are also collaborating with CORSE to again offer customized summer gymnastics and therapeutic horseback riding programs. For more information regarding these programs and how to register please click here.
These 2010 programs have been generously supported by community fundraisers and grant funding received from CVS Caremark, Massachusetts Bankers Association, the Evan Henry Foundation for Autism, the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism and Local Union 550 U.A. - Sprinkler Fitters and Apprentices of Boston and Vicinity Brotherhood Fund.
C.O.R.S.E. Sponsors Executive Function Lecture
On June 1, 2010, the Scituate CORSE foundation sponsored a lecture at the Scituate Public Library given by Sarah Ward, M.S. CCC/SLP, an award winning speech and language pathologist who has over fourteen years experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment and case management of children, adolescents and adults with a wide range of developmental and acquired brain based learning difficulties and behavioral problems.
The topic of the lecture was Executive Function Skills, a term used to describe difficulties associated with goal setting, carrying out organized steps and modifying a plan to complete a task successfully. These skills are important for learning from past experiences and applying the knowledge in new experiences. Attention, memory, impulse control, organization, planning, and hierarchical thinking problems often described by parents and teachers are executive function difficulties that can interfere with an individual’s success in school.
Click here to visit Sarah's website for more information or to request a copy of the presentation.
2010 RFP (Request for Proposal) Awards
From 2006-2009, CORSE has dispersed over $215,000 worth of programs and initiatives back into the community. For the current request cycle, we have budgeted another $60,000 to continue running our most successful programs for the remainder of 2010 and approved an additional $27,524 worth of new initiatives, including:
- Maritime Adventures through Access Sports: Week-long camp for adaptive windsurfing, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, sailing and surfing
- Expanded Social Thinking Training for faculty, aides and parents
- Peer Model Program for Social Skills Programs: 5th grade mentors assisting with K-3 social skills class
- "Let's Go" Community Events: Planned family events - movies, bowling, swimming
- Technology, such as Lexia, Brain Pop and Dimension M
- Click here for a complete list of programs and resources.
This could not be possible without the continued support of our CORSE membership, the individuals and businesses who give donations and/or participate in our Gala and Golf Tournament, and the generous grants funds we have received. Thank you, we are so very grateful!!
